Crater Wargentin - posted in Sketching: Two weeks ago, I started three times a lunarsketch but the clouds only let me finish one. Crater Wargentin, number 43 on the Lunar 100 list, isnt flashy at all. But the fact that hes almost filled to the rim with lava makes it a remarkable feature. Wargentin is rather a plateau than a depression! 2/3 of the rim has the same height than the crater floor Download Image of [3 Figures of the Moon: The Crater of Plato, The Crater Wargentin, The Surface of the Moon]. The crater Nasmyth is partially visible in the lower right. Right : Oliver Pettenpaul In this Earth-based view, Wargentin is seen at a very low sun angle, along the terminator. The "bird's foot" pattern on the surface (referred to by Elger) is evident, and the shadows cast by the remnants of the rim in the southeast indicate they stand about 1 km above the floor.

Wargentin is a crater that has filled up with lava. The floor of this crater is 1400 feet above the surrounding area. Moon's age: 12 days 4 hours 59 minutes. 13 This is almost a full moon. The photo was taken 16 hours and 19 minutes before the exact moment of full.

Wargentin is one of a very small number of craters that have this characteristic. The explanation is fascinating.

Wargentin crater

Wargentin is an unusual lunar impact crater which has been filled to its rim by a basaltic lava flow, forming a raised plateau. When the lava flow occurred, it erupted from within the crater walls and proceeded to accumulate until overrunning the lowest portion of the rim. Some blockage then prevented the lava flow from returning to equilibrium. Wargentin, a moon crater, has a fascinating story to tell. There is an almost inviolable rule that crater floors must be lower than their surrounding terrain. Not so with Wargentin! Wargentin: [SW/P4] This is one of the more unusual craters on the Moon.

Schickard, Wargentin and Phocylides, imaged by David Finnigan . This is a fascinating group of craters which never fails to catch the attention the eye of the observer when located close to the terminator of the almost full Moon. Nomenclature has been added to aid identification of the craters under discussion in this report. The ‘elevated plateau’ appearance of Wargentin is quite marked on this image.
